Once i told my friend that my favourite love song is 'Nothing Else Matters' by Metallica, he goes 'How can that be a love song? Metallica and love? You gotta be kidding me.' And then another day, everyone tells what their favourite melodious song is. My turn - Dance of Death by Iron Maiden. Again 'Maiden and melody? Wake up bro.'
If only they took the trouble of understanding the lyrics of Nothing Else Matters, they would know that the song truly is a classic love song and that Metallica is not a band which loves to sing about killing or about psychos or drugs and sex. If only they opened youtube and heard the song Dance of Death, they would realise that Maiden has got an excellent melodious sense and they are not all BOOM BANG DISHUM or something like that. Infact that is what most people seem to think. Agreed that there are bands who do sing(shout rather) about psychos, etc. But hey metal is not synonymous with that.
Whenever i play some rock song when i am with my friends, i am forced to stop it. That's because the vocalist probably reached a high pitch. They dont seem to think it was shouting when Chester of linkin park shouts. Its melody if he does that. Its not melody if Dickinson does.
Come on man! Seriously its not that bad. I would rather hear something that helps you out when you are sad or depressed and gives you hope, rather than a guy who always sings about his break up or how his girlfriend betrayed him (yeah, that is linkin park to you). I would rather hear to St. Anger at times when i am angry and take it out of my system than hear to somebody who says 'I wanna make love right now'. You do whatever you want buddy. I dont care. If i wanted some soft music, i would prefer 'Wish you were here' or 'Comfortably Numb' rather than 'In da club' or whatever.
My mom used to say "that's not music, that's sound" when i first started to listen to metal and rock. But now even she enjoys it and even headbangs a little.
Maybe you will never get that feeling of your neck hair rising when you hear a song. Maybe you will never feel that shiver that runs through your body when the bass is strung. But judging by the millions of metal fans on the globe, we are doing just fine without ya!!
