If you are wondering, the greatest scam of all time are public toilets. You are paying for your own pee, to quote an old friend of mine. And then, the second greatest scam, the subject of my post today, is Subway (the food chain).
I dont know how people like those subs. I dont know what they find to be good in it. I dont know the thousand different sauces or the vegetables that are available for choice. All i know is that its one of the greatest acts that a corporate company has ever pulled off. It is the representation of what advertisement, peer pressure can do to you.
The first time i ate this thing, i was with my cousin and she was something of an expert in the sub ordering business. The guy behind the table was asking me all kinds of questions "Jalapeno? Mustard?", etc. I was awkwardly and rather stupidly nodding my head to each of his question.
So when i finally got my teeth into it, i expected it to be really good and tasty. But to my dismay, it tasted overwhelmingly of sauce and salad. Pieces of chicken were also to be seen, but it was very disappointing.
I thought that maybe i had got something wrong. You are supposed to order the sauce and vegetables according to your taste or whatever. So i decided to give it another chance. The next time, i ate it with a friend, who ordered the sauces and vegetable for me. And nothing changed. It was just as disappointing, if not worse.
Now back to the original question, why do people like it so much? There are few answers that have come to my mind.
1) A big American chain usually has this kind of influence and effect on us Indians.
2) Maybe there are a few people who eat these things, because of peer pressure. They might not actually like the things, but there are something that we people always do to "belong" in a group.
3) The advertising. It is supposedly "healthy". But actually, as i have learnt recently, the bread which the veggies come in is made of "maida flour" which causes diabetes and imbalances in blood sugar. So at the most, the good effects of the veggies will be cancelled out by maida.
4) Maybe some people just like it. However impossible that may seem to me, it still is a possibility.
There are other interesting aspects that can be deduced from the sub eating mania. People will pay 100's of bucks to eat raw vegetables, which most of them wont even touch when served at home. The things the companies can make us do. It is always amusing to me.
Yes, I am not perfect either. Though i dont like eating subs, i am sure there is some other thing to which i have fallen prey similarly. Until someone points that out to me, i will remain oblivious to it.
